Seed Garden Overview

Established in 2013, the SALCRA Seed Garden was created to produce and promote high-quality oil palm planting materials that are best suited to Sarawak’s climate. Located in Karabungan, Miri Division, Sarawak, the facility has the capacity to produce more than one million seeds annually. Its breeding programme is supported and guided by research scientists from the Malaysian Palm Oil Board (MPOB), which also provides the genetic materials used in the programme.

The Breeding & Processing Cycle

A meticulous, multi-stage scientific process ensuring only elite genetics make it to the soil.

Controlled Pollination
PHASE 1

Controlled Pollination

To maintain genetic purity, female inflorescences on selected Dura mother palms are bagged before opening. Experienced breeders perform hand pollination using high-grade, pre-tested Pisifera pollen to ensure elite hybrid progeny.

Bunch Extraction & Sorting
PHASE 2

Bunch Extraction & Sorting

Upon maturity, crossing bunches are harvested and depericarped to separate seeds from the pulp. Every single seed goes through rigorous physical sorting to eliminate deformed, undersized, or cracked seeds before processing.

Germination Process
PHASE 3

Heat & Germination Room

Seeds are subjected to a specific heat treatment cycle (typically 80 days at 39-40°C) to break dormancy, followed by moisture rehydration. They are then placed in dark germination rooms until radicles and plumules sprout uniformly.
